Prop 8 Protests in Minnesota

Even though Prop 8 was only on the ballot in California, people across the country are pretty fired up about it’s passage. If enshrining a one-man-one-woman definition of marriage in the state constitution can’t be defeated in California, where can it?

(Same-sex marriage is already expressly prohibited in Minnesota, by the way. Has been for almost 40 years.)

Saturday, November 15, 2008, has been chosen as a national day of protest. Efforts are being loosely coordinated at jointheimpact.com. There doesn’t seem to be any official organization for Minneapolis Saint Paul as of right now (Sunday night, 11/9). I saw brief mention of it on LiveJournal (plus lots of squabbling in the comments by people who seem to hate equal rights), but no details as of yet.

Join the Impact just provides a link to a google map search for “city hall” in the Twin Cities area. So I suppose you could show up at Golden Valley city hall, as it’s the first result, but you might do better showing up at the capitol on Tuesday, November 11, at 3pm. Meet on the Old Main Lawn, it says.

More information as I hear it.

Guys there is a great LGBT civil rights organization called the Empowering Spirits Foundation. They are very creative in how they approach this hot topic issue, in that they engage in service oriented activities in communities typically opposed to equal rights to foster thought and change for LGBT equality.

A friend of mine told me about it and I thought it was a great, positive approach to the issue. We had so much fun at the last event and it was great to give back to the community. Plus it was great to converse with others on the other side of the table in a way that wasn’t confrontational.

Anyway, this can be such a heated issue and I thought this was a unique approach.
