There is a whole bunch of cool stuff coming up in the next couple of weeks.
(I have to admit, I was totally skeptical and late to hop on the Facebook bandwagon, but that’s how a lot of stuff crosses my radar and I don’t even spend that much time on it. Think about it. Friend me.)
Minnesota Ski & Snowboard Expo
Starts Friday, 11/14, at noon and runs through 6pm Sunday, at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Hoigaard’s will have lots of good stuff. The price of admission pays for itself in the form of a free lift ticket. There will be exhibitors from resorts, tour operators, and equipment manufacturers. There will also be a “Freestyle Aerial Spectacular” and a “DNA Rail Jam.” Sounds gnarly.
TechKaraoke Minneapolis 2
Friday, 11/14, 9pm, U Otter Stop Inn. Geeks do karaoke. That’s pretty much it. Sponsored by TechKaraoke Minneapolis, best followed by joining the TechKaraoke Minneapolis facebook group or following @techkaraokempls on Twitter. I’m warning you now, there will be drunk tweeting.
Theatre de la Jeune Lune Rummage/Going out of Business Sale
Saturday 11/15 and Sunday 11/16, 10am to 4pm. “HUNDREDS of Costumes, theatre props/household items, furniture, fabric, musical instruments, some tools, office furniture & supplies, computers (mainly Mac).” “All sales final – as is – no warranty – cash or check only.” Also see the facebook event page.
Mpls Photo Center Open House and Reception
Saturday, 11/15, 10am to 10pm and Sunday, 11/16, noon to 5pm. “Tour the studio, lighting lab, digital theater, children’s learning center, iMac digital lab, lounge and coffee bar and exhibits. Take a look at the Mpls Photo Center’s class offerings, including professional printing, Adobe CS3 and CS4 classes, studio lighting and more.” Super cool. Also, become a fan on facebook.
Urban Capture the Flag 2
Saturday, 11/15, 3pm, Northrop Mall. Followed by happy hour at the Kitty Cat Klub. Brought to you by Solutions Twin Cities. Check out the facebook event page, though you really must RSVP directly if you want to play. They’ve got 10 people signed up so far. Dress warmly, but in layers. I know y’all live in Minnesota and know how to do that, but this is a tricky time of year as we’re all still in denial that winter’s actually here.
Does Journalism Have a Future?
Monday, 11/17, 7-9pm, Coffman Union Theater. Panel discussion put on my MinnPost. “To celebrate its centennial, the National Press Club is organizing forums across the country on the First Amendment, freedom of the press and the future of journalism. A panel of leading local journalists will discuss where the news business is going and how to preserve its core values.” In case you’re not already tired of talking about this. Or have masochistic tendencies (as I do, as I was actually planning on going until I realized I have a conflict). I saw nothing about this on MinnPost’s website, just the facebook event.
WINGS OF EAGLES – 35W Remembrance Garden Fundraiser
Tuesday, 11/18, 4pm – 7pm, at Spill the Wine. Suggested donation is $10. Proceeds go to the 35W Remembrance Garden Fund. RSVPs to wingsofeagles35w@lycos.com are encouraged but you’re free to drop by any time between 4 and 7. Appetizers are provided. Cash bar. If you can’t attend, you can still donate at 35wremembrancegarden.org. Why “wings of eagles”? “Eagles flew over the remains of the bridge immediately after the collapse and an eagle returned during the one year memorial service. Eagles rarely fly during daylight hours and many people consider their presence to be a powerful sign. Thus, this fundraiser has the theme, Wings of Eagles, on which the spirits of those lost in the disaster flew to their next experience.”
Students: You Can Become an Entrepreneur!
Wednesday, 11/19, 4-6:30pm, at the James J. Hill Reference Library Reading Room. Cost is free for students and Hill members, $10 for everyone else. Register online at jjhill.org/Events or call 651-265-5500. Adults are strongly encouraged to bring a student with them. Kid, grandkid, neighbor’s kid, mentee, or any young person you think could benefit from a little entrepreneurial guidance.
Quorum Network Night
Wednesday, 11/19, 5:30-7:30pm, BANK at the Westin Minneapolis. A networking event for LGBTA businesses, organizations, individuals, and consumers. Quorum is kind of the gay chamber of commerce. RSVP to info@twincitiesquorum.com or at the facebook event page.
Fringe For Fall
Thursday, 11/20, 6-9pm, at the Bedlam Theatre. $25. Buy tickets online or at the door. Food, cash bar, silent auction, entertainment. You have got to see that list of silent auction items. It’s Fringe. Dressed up and fancy like. You can imagine what kind of sensibility this event will have.
Little Apple House Concerts – Anaïs Mitchell & Rachel Ries
Thursday, 11/20, 7:30pm. Suggested donation is $15. Since it’s a house concert and the concert is hosted at someone’s house, exact location details will not be shared until you RSVP and reserve your seat. I can vouch for the host, so I assure you it’s cool and I can tell you that it’s in the city of Minneapolis. The facebook event page has a little video so you can see what you’re getting into if you’re not super familiar with the artists.
The UpTake Full Fundraiser – Will the UpTake’s fundraiser be done to you or by you?
Friday, 11/21, 7pm, at The UpTake’s offices in downtown Saint Paul. They’ll have “wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages, Hors d’oeuvres, live music, live video.” Of course if you can’t make it you can always donate online. Note that a donation level of $25 gets you Junior Reporter status, while $500+ gets you Sock Le Puppet. Give as you are able.
One Comment
I really should attend one of these TechKaraoke events. If I’m in Mpls this weekend I’m hitting the Theatre de la Jeune Lune Rummage for sure.
I can never have enough costumes.
