@freshmn gets its fair share of Twitter followers. If I took time to write on every single interesting presence I find (or who finds fresh.mn) on Twitter, I’d only ever post about Twitter (which I do a lot of anyway).
So the MN Drinking Team (@MNDrinkingTeam) floated across the radar the other day. Their Twitter bio says:
Adult social group dedicated to having fun and helping worthy causes. “We always have a good reason to drink!” Sign up at any official event to join!
I’ve reached a point in my life where I’m completely disinterested in drinking as an end instead of as a means. But that’s just me (although I do enjoy a good craft beer fest or similar tasting event). Y’all are free to drink how you want. So I thought, hey, just because I personally have no interest in participating in drinking for sport, even if it is somehow also for charity, doesn’t mean that plenty of other people wouldn’t be interested. So you can click through and read all about the MN Drinking Team. How they got started, how they operate, what causes they’re donating to, whatnot.
So I was just gonna let that one float by me and not really pay it anymore attention. Until I read this tweet:
Looking for more volunteers to distribute drinking team fliers outside area AA meetings. Thanks for all the handy time & location info, Mom!
Um, okay. Where to start?
They do state that they’re strongly opposed to drinking and driving and their recruitment efforts do include sober drivers. That’s good! But… for real? One of two things is happening here.
The first thing is that they’re just kidding about the AA meetings and making a “your mom” joke which totally jibes with the immature tone I read throughout their tweets and website.
The second thing is that they’re serious and while they may think trolling for sober drivers for their “cause” at local AA meetings is a good idea, it’s not. At the very least, it shows a profound misunderstanding of what AA is and how it works. Since I am not an alcoholic, recovering or otherwise, I don’t feel at liberty to go on about why that’s a terrible idea on behalf of a group that I am not a member of, but it just doesn’t sit right with me.
I don’t know which of the above scenarios is the actual case that resulted in that tweet. I find neither to be acceptable behavior.
With that, I’ve done enough to publicize their existence. You may partake or not as you see fit.

Wow. I’m all for some recreaional drinking, but if they’re really trolling AA then the MN Drinking Team has a way more serious problem than chemical abuse and I don’t think there’s a cure for Chronic Asshatery.
Any chance it was april fools?
Hmmm, maybe. Still, it’s in incredibly poor taste.
That is truly awful. Joke or not.
Wow! Maybe you didn’t notice the DATE it was posted (April Fools Day), or any of the other rediculous tweets posted that particular day?
Some people take things WAYYYYYY too serious, and are no fun at all.
Good to know the nerdiness that is twitter is helping to filter out the people who can’t take a joke, or pull the sticks out of their bums.
I know the person that probably tweeted that. I’m sure it was a joke. She is one of the most accepting and laid back person I’ve met.
If they REALLY did that, or protested, or something like that, I’d agree with all y’all. It was a tweet. A joke. I’m assuming that alcoholics aren’t following the MN Drinking Team. I’ve followed them for a while and can promise you, they do WAY more positive things than negative.
Lighten up.
First of all, y’all are four months late with your passionate defense of your friends. Second of all, it’s still in poor taste, even if they are really good people and otherwise have the best of intentions.
The whole thing just strikes me as a little naive and immature. Maybe y’all don’t actually know any recovering alcoholics. You will someday. Maybe you’ll see it a little differently.
Erica,
I posted that tweet, and just to be clear, it WAS an April fools prank, and completely fictional.
I do know alcoholics, and if they are truely trying to “recover” then they have no business following the MNDT online (or otherwise). Don’t you agree?
Most people don’t join (or follow) anything called a “drinking team”, because they are interested in constantly acting mature, and, ever-so-politically-correct 24-7.
I guess we were late to you’re foolish little rant, but this is the internet, and unless you delete this blog (or whatever it is) you can expect people to see it, and reply to it. Right?
I can’t wait to see who’s panties I can get in a bunch next 4/1 in 130 characters or less! Thanks for the giggles.
P.S. My Mom is acually a member of the Drinking team (no she didn’t really give me the locations of AA meetings), but I’m still trying to figure out how you drew it as a “yo momma” joke…..hmmm….but that’s cool. Whatever! Haha!
Cheers!
