Roundup: 29 Jun 09

  • Having just attended a baby shower, and generally despising showers of any kind and most registries, I’m somewhat comforted by the fact that twin cities green does wedding and registries.
  • Some buzz about The 3/50 Project went around a while back. It’s a terrific idea. Spend $50/month at three local independent businesses. Perhaps the ones you’d miss the most if they were gone. Conscious living, whatnot.
  • Speaking of local independent businesses, I had no idea that the Tin Fish was part of a national chain. And for some reason I was thinking they were under the same ownership as Sea Salt. Never mind.
  • I hate to confess to people that I happen to both live and work in *mumble*Eden Prairie*mumble* but I’ll surface long enough to point out that EP city manager Scott Neal posted a synopsis of a presentation that the MN Department of Revenue did for elected officials and staff on the Minnesota property tax system. He sums up the five principles of a model tax system and how Minnesota does on each one. Mixed bag. It’s a quick read with some basic talking points for your next get together.
  • The Bridgeland News has been up and running for about a month. It’s online-only, having risen in place of readthebridge.info, the online companion to the the defunct-as-of-this-month print neighborhood paper, The Bridge. I already like it much more simply because it behaves more like a blog (making it much easier to consume). It’s easy on the eyes and it has pretty granular RSS feeds so you can follow news only from certain neighborhoods or on certain topics. Follow Bridgeland News on facebook and Twitter.
  • Considering all 175 people I work with are going to be laid off in the next two years and considering about one third of those folks work in manufacturing, I’m pleased to see that Dunwoody is introducing some new programs in the health care industry: Beginning this fall, [Dunwoody] will be offering degree programs in the following areas: health information management, radiologic technology, medical laboratory technician and physical therapist assistant. That health informatics thing is especially huge.

Thanks for the info on The Bride online. I’m all signed up. And I had NO idea the Tin Fish was a chain. Somehow that makes it slightly less fun now…
