- A discussion in the Minneapolis Issues Forum on the potential conversion of Portland Ave and Park Ave to two-way streets (they’re currently one-way through most of South Minneapolis). The Star Tribune’s Steve Brandt sourced his column from the forum and readers chime in now that it’s published. Lots of thoughtful comments on the speed, quantity, and types of traffic on those streets.
- More political rustling around the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. They want out from under the thumb of the city of Minneapolis and to be governed (and thus have taxing and bonding authority set) by the state instead. The funky thing is this petition is in response to a possible (but not at all set in stone) change where the curiously elected/appointed Board of Estimation and Taxation (which currently manages the Park Board’s money) goes away and their authority slides to the City Council. More from MPLS Mirror on that. I have no sense of what’s the appropriate thing to do. I just know the Park Board is always het up about something.
- Foursquare Minneapolis Karaoke Badge Crawl, Thursday night, Aug 13
- Again in the Minneapolis Issues Forum, a rehash of whether/how a southwest LRT line should/could go through Uptown. A nice recap of the various issues if you haven’t been paying attention for a while. There are several public open houses on the topic of the Southwest LRT throughout August.
- The Uptake is covering the story of Rosemary Williams’ battle against foreclosure on her South Minneapolis home.
- A nice story in the Southwest Journal about Solutions Twin Cities, founders Troy Gallas and Colin Kloecker, their new Give & Take event, the West Bank Social Center, and all that awesomeness. Speaking of the West Bank Social Center, I’ll see you tonight at another live recording of Flak Radio.
- Uptown Urbanist has a very thoughtful piece on the possibility of the Walker Library moving out of Uptown. He addresses lots of practical issues. I think one of the interesting facets of it is the overlap of Uptown — which is a state of mind and/or a commercial designation, not a neighborhood — with the three neighborhoods that intersect there. What’s good for Uptown isn’t necessarily good for (the residents of) Lowry Hill East, CARAG, or ECCO.
