Found Photo: tiled colors

From the fresh.mn flickr pool.

Ren captured this photo of the newly re-painted parking garage adjacent to the Hyatt in downtown Minneapolis. It’s all colorful and stuff!

Do click through to the flickr page; Ren has a “before” photo of the garage. It really makes a difference on the skyline.

She also asked after why it changed. She shared the words of Minneapolis CM Lisa Goodman (and added the links below herself):

“I do know the information as I was involved in the project. A bit of background. The city sold that ramp and 4 others to Alatus Development for 66 million or so about 2 years ago. Two other ramps were sold as well but to different parties. I was the lead at the city on this effort.

As a condition of the sale this developer had to make 2 million in improvements to 3 different ramps. When they came in to show me the improvements for this ramp, which included brick lining the 1st level and a new pedestrian plaza on the corner, I asked about painting the ramp. They were planning to paint the ramp a light brown so I asked them if they would work with Forecast Public Arts to make the ramp a mural. They met with Jack Becker who did a competition for artists and the devloper chose Josh Sarantitis – who is a well known mural painter.”

Our tax dollars at work! (UPDATE: I meant tax dollars that we spend on Lisa Goodman, not tax dollars we spent on the mural, because we didn’t spend tax dollars on the mural.)

Perhaps I’m mistaken, but I believe it was the developer, not the city, who paid for the painting. Tax dollars are probly safe (in this case anyway).

I was thinking more in terms of our tax dollars that keep Lisa Goodman in office, but that’s totally not clear the way I wrote it.

And I’m sure there are those who would argue that keeping Lisa Goodman in office is not the best use of our tax dollars.
