Northstar Commuter Rail Begins Service

Yesterday was day one. Mid-day reports were that expected capacity was approximately 2400 riders for the day, which is about 2/3rds of the first year’s expected weekday ridership of 3600. Not too shabby.

MinnPost has a good summary of the whole project and a look at the first day’s ride.

And now I’d like to bring your attention to a blog by local radio producer Jeff Jones called Placecasting.

This blog is a notepad for exploring the idea of placecasting…making relevant audio available to people based on WHERE they are. People curious about the world around them should be able to find that information while they’re standing in that world.

To that end, he’s planning on recording a placecast that can tell Northstar riders about the places they pass by on their commute. Should be pretty cool.

Erica, thanks so much for cluing me in to the placecasting thing! Always idly thought that it would be a great use of technology, particularly long, repetitive road trips. Happy it’s actually occuring.
